A
bit of history:
PIAZZETTA, Giovanni Battista
(1683 - 1754) |
"His
works are comparatively few, and though appearing
to be executed with speed and facility were the
product of careful deliberation and infinite pains."
|
 |
Venetian painter, son of a woodcarver, who studied
under Giuseppe Maria Crespi in Bologna and was probably
influenced by him to take up genre subjects. He
settled in Venice by 1711, and after his death his
family petitioned the State for a pension, claiming
that his 'constant studies and his pursuit of glory
rather than gain had reduced him to poverty and
hastened his death'. |
 |
He made many drawings for collectors and as book-illustrations
in order to support his family; his work was much
influenced by Rembrandt's etchings and his paintings
evolve from Baroque contrasts of chiaroscuro towards
a freer and more fluid Rococo handling. Piazzetta's
influence on the young Tiepolo was very great and
it was Tiepolo who completed the transition to the
Rococo. Most of his paintings are in Venice, including
his only ceiling decoration, the Glory of S. Dominic,
painted before 1727 (SS. Giovanni e Paolo).

The 'Licurgo'
is made of a selection of the Sangiovese grapes during
harvest. It is normally the best wines chosen to be
a Riserva. After a long alcoholic fermentation at
controlled temperatures it will be put for refining
in little oak casks for at least 18 months. After
this period the wine will be bottled to refine antoher
6 months, how the regulations prescribe.

Long
and complex...
On the mouth, the flavors are rich
and layered, with big, spreading Sangiovese tannins
and the distinct acid profile that can only be found
in this Prince of Tuscany. The finish is long and
complex, with echos of mocha, tar and cedar cigar
box along with the oak flavors. |

A
bit of history:
MONTECUCCO WINES
(Find more on our web site...) |
Montecucco D.O.C. covers the territories
of a number of municipalities in the province of
Grosseto.
Seen from a bird's-eye view, it looks as if Montecucco
vineyards were laying siege from the south to the
area where the celebrated Brunello di Montalcino
is produced.
This vicinity has had a positive effect on the development
of winemaking traditions and techniques in the Montecucco
area. In the past few years, the production techniques
here have constantly improved thanks to the introduction
of the Montecucco D.O.C. appellation.
The result is a number of fine wines, especially
reds, that have managed to win the hearts of connoisseurs.
The D.O.C. regulations here reflect the attitude
of Montecucco winegrowers: they are very strict
and put great weight on the use of traditional grape
varieties and vinification methods, allowing no
room for trendy experimentations and shortcuts of
sorts.
